Comparison of Item and Unit Nonresponse in Household Surveys

چکیده

1. Introduction Survey quality is thought to be impacted by nonresponse, both item nonresponse and survey or unit nonresponse. The relationship between item nonresponse and unit nonresponse has been studied by Dixon (2002). Dahlhamer et al. (2003) also studied item nonresponse across several federal surveys. The current study examines the nature of item nonresponse and the relationship with subsequent unit nonresponse for two surveys: the Current Population Survey (CPS) and the Consumer Expenditure Quarterly Survey (CEQ).

Estimating Variance of the Sample Mean in Two-phase Sampling with Unit Non-response Effect

In sample surveys, we always deal with two types of errors: Sampling error and non-sampling error. One of the most common non-sampling errors is nonresponse. This error happens when some sample units are not observed or viewed but they do not answer some of the questions. The complete prevention of this error is not possible, but it can be significantly reduced. The non-response causes bias and ...

Item nonresponse to financial questions in household surveys : An experimental study of interviewer and mode effects ∗

Abstract: We analyze nonresponse to questions on financial items such as income and asset holdings in household surveys using data from a controlled field experiment. As part of the SAVE study, a representative survey conducted in Germany in 2001, questions on household income and financial assets were administered using different modes (personal interview vs. drop-off questionnaire). The data ...

Tests of Certain Types of Ignorable Nonresponse in Surveys Subject to Item Nonresponse or Attrition

Analysts of cross-sectional or panel surveys often base inferences about relationships between variables on complete units, excluding units that are incomplete due to item nonresponse or attrition. This practice is justifiable if exclusion is ignorable in an appropriate sense. This paper characterizes certain types of ignorable exclusion in surveys subject to item nonresponse and develops tests...

Nonparametric Bounds in the Presence of Item Nonresponse, Unfolding Brackets, and Anchoring

Household surveys often suffer from nonresponse on variables such as income, savings or wealth. Recent work by Manski shows how bounds on conditional quantiles of the variable of interest can be derived, allowing for any type of nonrandom item nonresponse. The width between these bounds can be reduced using follow up questions in the form of unfolding brackets for initial item nonrespondents. R...

Dynamic modelling of Nonresponse in Business Surveys

It is well-known that nonresponse affects the results of surveys and can even cause bias due to selectivities if it cannot be regarded as missing at random. In contrast to household surveys , response behaviour in business surveys has been examined rarely in the literature. This paper is one of the first which analyses a large business survey on micro data level for unit nonresponse. The data b...
